Tata Steel UK has been busy welcoming new and returning MPs to its sites across the UK, to help them better understand the challenges and opportunities ahead as the company progress with its plans for a greener steelmaking future.
Recently elected MP for Wolverhampton North East, Sureena Brackenridge, was the latest Parliamentarian left amazed by the state-of-the-art operations boasted by her local site in Steelpark, Wednesfield.
Reflecting on the visit to Tata Steel’s largest distribution and processing facility, she said: “I grew up around here so it’s been interesting to see what goes on inside the plant – I did not expect the scale of the operations I saw; the technology, the robots and the highly skilled workforce that are really valuable for Wolverhampton.
“Cities and towns in the West Midlands were once at the heart of the industrial revolution – and we still all rely on steel. Everything that we do day in, day out, relies on this industry thriving.”
“We’ve also got young people who need better opportunities and there’s real potential for talent in places like Wolverhampton to come here to learn new skills and gain good-quality employment.”
She continued: “It is my personal ambition is to make sure that places like Steelpark thrive, and have a sense of certainty and stability.
“I think there’s a lot of potential for an exciting future which is why we absolutely need an industrial strategy, but at the heart of that, needs to a steel strategy as well.”
Director, Distribution UK & Ireland, Geraint Griffiths added: “Sureena was clearly impressed by the scale of our operations and processes which allow us to serve major manufacturing sectors such as the Automotive, Construction, General Engineering and Fabrication markets.
“It was also fantastic to demonstrate the passion and talent of our workforce, and to help her understand the challenges we continue to face but celebrate the recent site successes as well.
He finished: “Whether it be Sureena’s connections across the education sector, which could strengthen stakeholder relationships and help secure a future talent pipeline, or her eagerness to support Steelpark as the company moves to a greener future, this feels like the beginning of a productive partnership with our local MP.”
