The launch of Optemis Carbon Lite is an important step in our ongoing decarbonisation journey. It demonstrates our progress and represents a unique solution for customers in the form of a flexible, lower CO2 steel offering.
Optemis Carbon Lite is a fully certified in-setting scheme verified by leading assurance organisation DNV. Our continued commitment to decarbonisation means reductions in CO2 emissions can now be passed on to our customers, enabling them to achieve immediate Scope 3 emission savings.
Revenues generated from the sale of Optemis Carbon Lite certificates are used to fund additional projects, generating further CO2 savings to be verified by DNV and speeding up our decarbonisation efforts.
By buying Optemis Carbon Lite from Tata Steel UK we, and our customers, will be actively contributing to a reduction in atmospheric CO2.
Optemis Carbon Lite is our flexible, declaration-based steel solution which enables customers to achieve their Scope 3 emission reduction targets now.
Our straightforward solution applies to virtually all existing Tata Steel UK products, meaning customers can achieve emission reduction targets whilst maintaining the same product range and quality they rely on.
- Carbon Lite is an insetting scheme delivering decarbonisation of customers’ supply chains
- The CO2 savings are real and have been made and verified by DNV
- Revenues from the sale of Optemis Carbon Lite certificates are used to fund projects generating further CO2 savings to be verified by DNV, speeding up decarbonisation
- The CO2 savings can help customers achieve their CO2 targets and flow down supply chains
- By buying Carbon Lite from Tata Steel UK we, and our customers, are contributing to a reduction in atmospheric CO2
What is your Optemis Carbon Lite offering?

Available immediately from Tata Steel UK, it offers a way of working together to reduce the intensity of your steel-based value chain and will support Tata Steel UK’s commitment to Science Based Targets (SBTi) and further decarbonisation.
Why should I buy carbon lite?
- Direct decarbonisation of your supply chain is achievable
- Carbon Lite is an insetting scheme delivering decarbonisation of your supply chain

- Revenues from the sale of certificates are used to fund projects generating further CO2 savings to be verified by DNV, speeding up our decarbonisation
- The CO2 savings can help you achieve your CO2 targets and flow down supply chains
- By buying Carbon Lite from Tata Steel UK you are contributing to a reduction in atmospheric CO2
Is Optemis Carbon Lite verified by a 3rd party?
Yes, the CO2 savings which Tata Steel UK generate are verified by a 3rd party which specialises in quality assurance. The CO2 savings generated are deposited in a ‘CO2 bank’, the mechanism of how we operate the ‘CO2 bank’ are also audited by the same 3rd party. DNV, which is a leading verification and certification authority is carrying out this work.
Does this align with international standards?
Yes, our project work aligns with the Green House Gas Protocol for Project Accounting Standard and the mass balance approach is aligned with ISO 22095:2020 ‘Chain of custody general terminology and models’.
It this an ‘offsetting’ scheme?
No this is not an ‘offsetting’ scheme this is an ‘insetting’ scheme. To explain this properly we need to explain offsetting and insetting:
Offsetting is typified by a promise to avoid, or remove, CO2 emissions in the future rather than today or yesterday. In this way offsetting is a form of ‘futures’. The offsets can be passed down the supply chain in Scope 3 CO2 emissions savings although there is no link between CO2 savings and the supply chain, therefore CO2 offsets do not deliver a reduction in the CO2 emissions of the emitter.
Insetting is typified by reduction in CO2 emissions within the value chain which is producing the emissions. Projects to deliver that decarbonisation can be in the future, for Optemis Carbon Lite the emissions reductions have been recently achieved and verified – so there is no form of ‘future’ associated with the Optemis Carbon Lite certified saving. CO2 savings can be passed down the supply chain as Scope 3 emissions reductions. Insetting accelerates the pace of decarbonisation within the supply chain. Carbon Lite certificate revenues will double down on that accelerated pace of decarbonisation as certificate sales revenues will be reinvested in projects to deliver further Tata Steel UK CO2 reductions
Which of your products will be available as a Carbon Lite option?
Almost all of Tata Steel UK’s products will come with an Optemis Carbon Lite option. For further information please speak to your Tata Steel UK contact, or alternatively contact
optemis@tatasteeleurope.com
Can we source lower CO2 steel from Tata Steel Netherlands too?
Yes, if you are interested in purchasing Zeremis Carbon Lite, please speak to your account contact, or alternatively contact zeremis@tatasteeleurope.com
How can we claim the CO2 reductions achieved by buying Optemis Carbon Lite certificates?Following a discussion with your Tata Steel UK contact and a decision on the lower CO2 intensity required for the product(s) you are purchasing, Tata Steel UK will issue a certificate which verifies the lower CO2 intensity value for the product purchased. The certificate will also contain your order number and product identities in conjunction with the order invoice and other associated documentation.
How can we pass on CO2 reduction benefits of Optemis Carbon Lite to our own customers?
The CO2 savings reduce your Scope 3 emissions and the Scope 3 emissions of your onward supply chain.
Do Optemis Carbon Lite certificated products have an extra amount of recycled content compared to regular steel products?
Tata Steel UK is already the biggest recycler of scrap for BOS-based steelmaking in the UK. Our Optemis Carbon Lite offering will contain no additional scrap content, however, work is ongoing on how we can deliver higher recycled content offerings.
Will Optemis Carbon Lite certified products need to be re-homologated?
No, Optemis Carbon Lite products will not require re-homologation. Product quality and performance remain unchanged, so there is no reason to re-homologate an existing product.
