Tata Steel UK partners with WWT Llanelli to revamp popular Wetlands footbridge

Tata Steel UK supports WWT Llanelli with the refurbishment of the popular ‘Heron’s Wing’ footbridge.

Tata Steel in Trostre, where the company manufactures steel for 'tin cans’ is supporting WWT (Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust) Llanelli by contributing funding to the restoration of the ‘Heron’s Wing’ footbridge, having maintained a longstanding relationship with the wetlands charity since the Llanelli Wetlands was opened in 1991 by Sir David Attenborough.

The wetlands site features the Heron’s Wing footbridge, a striking sculpture built in 1998. Over the years, exposure to the elements and general wear and tear took its toll on the structure, necessitating its refurbishment. With support from Tata Steel UK, one of the key sponsors, the refurbishment of the bridge is estimated to be completed within a few weeks. A commemorative plaque thanking Tata Steel for its ongoing commitment and support for the wetlands will be unveiled upon completion.

WWT is a wetland restoration charity dedicated to protecting wetlands and wildlife, and uses groundbreaking science to revive endangered species and wetlands, as well as to restore, protect, and create wetlands around the world. The 456-acre reserve site at Llanelli, South Wales, which neighbours Tata Steel UK’s Trostre plant, is home to a variety of lakes, scrapes, pools, reedbeds, streams, lagoons, and salt marshes as well as providing habitat to some of Britain’s incredible wildlife species.

Earlier this year, Tata Steel UK unveiled its Trostre Sustainability Plan, which encompasses four key areas: the reduction of carbon footprint, proudly being a responsible business, protecting biodiversity both locally and globally, and playing a part in a circular economy.

Joe Gallacher, Works Manager at Tata Steel in Trostre, comments: “The Trostre Sustainability Commitment is something that we value highly at Tata Steel UK.”

“Partnering with the Wetlands, located directly next to our site, is important to us as it is all about building good relationships with our local environment, being responsible custodians of our site, and supporting our local community and charities. For our colleagues, we see huge benefits for health and wellbeing.”

“We are continuing our partnership with the Wetlands today to give our support in upgrading one of its busy footbridges which includes lots of long-lasting steel and will be used and appreciated by thousands of visitors.”

Sarah Passmore, Commercial Manager for Tata Steel UK in Trostre, adds: “Our customers have shaped our sustainability commitment. We have many amazing initiatives and continue to learn from each other and evolve. We are always finding ways to support our local area, especially when it ties in with health and wellbeing, and it is rewarding to make a huge difference to the area that we live.”

“Tata Steel in Trostre will have a leading role in creating a sustainable future as we make the exciting transformation to low CO2 and high recycled content steel packaging through electric arc furnace steelmaking and further elevate our sustainability commitments.”
