Workers formally accredited for skills

Tata Steel workers in South Wales now have the opportunity to gain formally accreditation and recognition for their skills and capability built up over many years through work-based learning.

In a collaboration with Bridgend College, and as part of the Tata Steel’s £20 million contribution to the Transition Board's Skills & Accreditation workstream, workers are being encouraged to take part in a formal assessment of their skills that could gain them National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs).

“I’d 100% recommend this for anyone who wants to get formal recognition for the skills they have gained over the years. The team running the course were brilliant and really supportive all the way through.”

Sarah Williams, Sector Quality Lead from Bridgend College said: “We have put together a week long programme to help learners to have a qualification for what they have already achieved in their workplace, which will be evidence of transferable skills for the future.

“Workers in Tata Steel do a lot of competency work about things such as heath and safety, fire safety and manual handling, which is the foundation of a nationally-recognised and transferable qualification that we can test through discussions and demonstrations of their knowledge and skills.”

Jon James, from Morfa Coke Ovens has been through the course and gained an NVQ Level 2. He said: “This has been a good opportunity to become accredited for the skills I’ve learned through my 18 years here.

“I’d 100% recommend this for anyone who wants to get formal recognition for the skills you have gained over the years. The team running the course were brilliant and really supportive all the way through.”
