CEO meets residents about plans for steelworks

Tata Steel UK CEO, Rajesh Nair, joined a community outreach event in Aberavon this week as part of the informal consultation process in advance of the company submitting a planning application for its new Electric Arc Furnace, which is due to start operations in late 2027.

Rajesh said: “It has been great to come along today and talk to a wide range of people about our plans. We’ve had local residents coming to find out more as well as councillors and the Mayor of Port Talbot.

“What we are doing here is a huge transformation of the steelworks to electric arc furnace, low CO2 steelmaking, which has implications to the entire community.

“People want to know how it is going to affect their day-to-day lives in terms of dust, noise and so on. We’ve been able to help them understand how this new investment and new technology will make a significant difference to these environmental issues in particular.

“We have been putting out a lot of communication out around what this transition is about – including details on planning, environmental impact, technology choices and our future product range. We will continue to share this information as we move forwards.

“Events such as this also help us to understand the concerns of the people, and as we get towards the statutory consultation stage we should have addressed any concerns people have raised. The information going forward will be far more extensive allowing people will get a real sense of how things are going to change over the next three or four years.”
