Reconfiguration of the old Ambulance Station at Pentwyn has been completed creating a new state-of-the-art Ambulance Station and ‘Make Ready Depot’ for the Welsh Ambulance Station NHS Trust.  

Following structural alterations to Block A and Block B buildings on the existing site, the conversion has transformed the old Merton Road Ambulance Station into a modern streamlined facility where dedicated Fleet Assistants will carry out essential cleaning and restocking of ambulances when non-operational – speeding up turnaround time that will improve the service

The new facilities will provide an essential service for the Welsh community in Pentwyn and has been made possible using steel manufactured in Shotton North Wales.

The challenge

 

The original Merton Road Ambulance Station was built in 1963 and had undergone a refurbishment back in 2012. In need of further reconfiguration and refurbishment, both internally and externally, the latest conversion work carried out during 2020/2021 have transformed the Ambulance Station into a modern base for emergency and non-emergency crews. 

Following modifications to the structural steelwork of the existing portal frames, and the provision of secondary steelwork to facilitate a new external cladding solution, the existing 2.5-storey steel framed buildings have been upgraded with a contemporary look and feel. 

The solution

 

Tata Steel’s leading steel standing seam wall cladding system played a pivotal role in providing a modern aesthetic to the structure with the façade built using Trisobuild® Seam manufactured in Colorcoat Prisma®, colour Pegasus.

Trisobuild® Seam provides the same properties as our Urban Seam® profile and at the same time provides a great looking revitalisation aesthetic appeal to this reconfigured Ambulance Station that is now serving the Welsh community.”

Around 600 square metres of material was used to provide the striking façade of both buildings, Block A and Block B. The wall cladding on both buildings was manufactured using Colorcoat Prisma® in Pegasus colour, that works well alongside the classic red brick buildings. This is further accentuated with the window frame surrounds again in Colorcoat Prisma® but in a contrasting Anthracite colour.
