Tata Steel donates to BBC'S DIY SOS: The Big Build Grenfell Rebuild

In one of BBC’s DIY SOS: The Big Build’s most important projects yet, Tata Steel has donated a range of products and technical expertise totalling around £25k.

Two special builds and programmes entitled DIY SOS Grenfell, have seen the creation of the new North Kensington community centre and rebuilding of the Dale Youth Boxing Club, which was destroyed in the Grenfell Tower fire.

The DIY SOS team galvanised support from local residents and an array of industry experts to produce two state-of-the-art buildings, which will provide a lasting legacy for the affected community.

The Grenfell Tower tragedy touched all of us and we wanted to help in whatever way we could. Our strong relationships in the industry meant we could go the extra mile, not just supplying the products, but also working with engineers and architects in order to support the design of the buildings. We also managed to facilitate the help of three installers - Prodeck Fixing Ltd, MSW UK Ltd and Composite Profiles UK Ltd who donated technical expertise, labour and time to install our products.

Tata Steel supported the project by supplying structural flooring, roof decking and a built-up wall system. The company also delivered technical advice to those working on the tricky project, helping them to overcome the design problems associated with building underneath the A40 fly-over in west London and designing a roof able to fit in such a confined space.

Kamal Rajput, Business Development Manager at Tata Steel who played an integral role in the project, said: “As soon as we heard the BBC was undertaking this project we knew we wanted to get involved."

A range of Tata Steel’s products were used on the builds, including ComFlor® 80, RoofDek D100, Trisobuild® and Colorcoat® pre-finished steel, which were shipped for free thanks to the contribution of Tata Steel’s hauliers.

Lawrence Spreag, Area Sales Manager (Building Systems UK) at Tata Steel, who also worked on the project, said: “Getting involved with the BBC and DIY SOS on these builds is in-line with Tata Steel’s five key values; pioneering, responsibility, excellence, unity and integrity.

“The buildings are both stunning and watching them being unveiled alongside the local community was incredible. The Grenfell Tower fire was truly devastating and it was touching to meet those who have been affected and to be able to give something back. It was an honour to be part of such a poignant project.”
