Tata Steel enjoyed great success at Resource and Waste Management Expo (RWM) held at Birmingham’s NEC in September, taking to the stage to champion the steel food can, its infinitely recyclable nature, and the ‘can-venience’ of cooking with canned food.
This year RWM Expo slightly amended its name from previous years, changing ‘Recycling’ to ‘Resource’, and this presented us with a great opportunity to showcase how steel cans can be utilised as an essential everyday resource.
With some expert help from TV celebrity chef and Canned Food UK ambassador, Theo Michaels, we hosted a live cooking demonstration at the show’s Materials Village Theatre. Theo was ably assisted by Nicola Jones and Eleanor Shorland, from our Packaging Recycling team which organised the event.
The demonstration was well attended by visitors to RWM and presented two of Theo’s recipes: a banana blossom and chickpea goan curry, and an apricot grain salad. Attendees were given recipe leaflets and invited to taste Theo’s cooking for themselves on the nearby Tata Steel stand.
As well as handing out Theo’s delicious food, the stand featured stunning images of canned food, plus word clouds highlighting the many sustainability benefits of steel food cans.
Top of the list were the food can’s infinite recyclability; its ability to extend a product’s shelf-life; and, as the food is cooked and sealed in the can, quality, taste and nutritional value are all locked in.
Highlighting the versatility of canned food was also a key aim of this campaign as Packaging Recycling Manager, Nicola Jones, explains:
“We specifically worked with Theo to present recipes which used out of season and hard to find exotic ingredients, demonstrating how canned food offers exciting cooking opportunities at home.”
