Tata Steel UK has featured in a recent mini-documentary by Sky News about the challenges and opportunities of ‘going green’ in the Port Talbot region, and the company’s ambition to reduce its carbon emissions by over 5 million tonnes a year.
The 15 minute programme, called “Faultlines: The Cost of Going Green”, which is also available on YouTube, started by looking at the ambitious project to generate clean green electricity through Floating Offshore Windpower in the Celtic Sea. Ashley Curnow from ABP talked about the potential for creating enough energy to power 4 million homes and creating up to 10,000 jobs in the region, with port construction starting sometime in 2027.
Tata Steel UK’s Director of Sustainability & Environment, Pete Quinn spoke to presenter Nick Martin at the Port Talbot site’s Blast Furnaces, and took him to the site for the new electric arc furnace within the existing steelplant. “We do believe that what we are doing will create a better future not just for Port Talbot but for the whole of the UK. What we are doing is difficult but necessary.”
Jessica Hooper, Director Renewable UK Cymru talked about the potential for the £100million Transition Board funding as an opportunity to support people to come into the renewables sector.
Pete summed up: “We believe this is a just transition. The alternative isn’t to keep this (Blast Furnace based steelmaking) running; the actual alternative to what we’re doing is for this to close and for there not to be any steelmaking in Port Talbot any more, and that absolutely isn’t a just transition.”
