Steel sets the mark on Stauning Whiskey's new distillery in a tough environment

West Jutland in Denmark is characterized by heaths and peat bogs, a landscape not entirely different from what one finds in Scotland on the other side of the North Sea. It is therefore perhaps not particularly strange that Danish Stauning Whiskey chose to place its new distillery here - a plant that, thanks to beautiful architectural design and steel products from Tata Steel, blends well into the surroundings.

Tata Steel supplied it’s Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra® pre-finished steel for the construction of the roof and wall cladding of Danish Stauning Whiskey's new distillery on Jutland's west coast. The new distillery, completed in 2018, contains several innovative solutions including a system for rainwater drainage - facilitated by the use of steel as building material.

The construction project required many large design changes regarding the internal design, which can usually be perceived as problematic. But instead, it turned out to be straightforward because of the flexibility that the steel offers.

Blending into the surroundings.

The distillery is situated in a typical Danish landscape, surrounded by many farmhouses. Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra® pre-finished steel is almost the same type of material as used in many buildings in the surrounding area, so blends in well, says Morten Nymann, partner at LOOP Architects A / S and responsible for the design of Stauning Whiskey's new distillery.

The challenge

There were many challenges that the project design needed to overcome, not least that the distillery is in a flat and coastal landscape where it is subject to strong winds and frequent rain. Something that places great demands on the choice of material. It was also considered important that the new building should melt into the surroundings and include several innovative solutions that require a flexible material. And as usual in this type of project, speed of build was an important requirement.

Solution

The distillery walls and roof are made using Tata Steel's Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra® pre-finished steel in black for the weather-side of the mineral wool panels. The pre-finished steel provides resistance to corrosion in class C5 and resistance to UV light in class Ruv4.

The main reasons for choosing Tata Steel's products were the high quality and easy handling. Morten Nymann describes how to easily it was to assemble the steel parts to quickly construct both the load bearing structure of the roof and the facade of the distillery.

The pre-finished steel itself has been designed to withstand all elements of the external environment. It also provides the client with a future-proof building, if parts of the construction need to be replaced after a period of time this can be easily accommodated.

There are several examples of flexibility of using Tata Steel's products. With Tata Steel's Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra®, it was easy to create design details to allow natural runoff of rainwater in an easy way. It was also unproblematic to change the internal design of the building thanks to the simplicity of handling the steel.

"Another advantage is related to the special activities carried out in Stauning's whiskey distillery: There is a fire hazard with the business and so it is advantageous to work with mineral wool panels as they are classed as non-combustible so it is easier to design a fireproof construction", says Morten Nymann.
