Located in one of Manchester’s most established commercial areas, this rundown industrial unit on the Southmoor Industrial Estate has undergone extensive refurbishment, breathing new life into the structure.
Originally constructed of brick, the building has been totally transformed using steel. Refurbishment of the building’s internal and external structure has provided a striking new high bay facility suitable for industrial distribution and warehousing.
The challenge
Architects, Wainwright & Co, contacted Building Systems UK (A Tata Steel Enterprise) for advice on the best approach to refurbish this neglected commercial unit. Restoration of the complete building envelope needed to meet all the client’s requirements and provide them with a high quality, long-lasting, robust cladding solution that would transform the dilapidated unit into a modern industrial space.
Colour was also a key consideration when choosing the cladding solution and a pre-finished steel in a non-standard colour was supplied to meet the client’s colour vision.
The solution
Just short of 15,000m2 of Building Systems UK’s products were used to complete the refurbishment. The products supplied included a mix of Trisobuild® built-up systems and Trimapanel® PIR insulated panels, all manufactured using Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra® pre-finished steel.
Suitable for roof and wall applications, the external envelope was updated using Trisobuild® C32/1000 (5,682m2) in Goosewing Grey for the roof and, as a contrast, on some of the side wall elevations around the office areas and loading bay entrance. Trisobuild® C32/1000 (1500m2) in a bespoke colour, Mint Turquoise, was used on the high bay window elevation, creating a striking contrast with the Goosewing Grey. Trimapanel® (1,500m2) insulated panels were installed on the main branded front elevation of Southmoor Park, in Mint Turquoise.
Mint Turquoise is not a colour in our standard colour range and was produced specifically for the client using our bespoke Repertoire® colour match service. This is beneficial for anyone looking for a unique identity, whether you want your building to stand out, or blend with the surroundings, we can match almost any solid colour for walls or roofs of your building, with a minimum order quantity of 5,000m2.
Lisa Hand, Specification Manager at Building Systems UK worked closely with the client on this project and said: “The colour requested by the client was not within our standard colour range, but we knew we could provide an exact match to what they were looking for using our renowned Repertoire® colour match service. The client was delighted with the colour swatch supplied and once the coils were coated in the bespoke Mint Turquoise (RAL 6033) colour, the panels were manufactured to complete the refurbishment”.
The project started on site in November 2018 and was completed end of June 2019, taking just over six months to complete.
