The challenge

Working closely with the Welsh Government and Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council, Building Systems UK (A Tata Steel Enterprise) completed a £12.3million project, providing new facilities at Port Talbot Works.

Three modern, attractive, functional and high-technology units have been created at the main entrance to the 16 square kilometre steel site, all using Tata Steel’s own products.

The 240m long, 40m wide Stores Building has been built to centrally manage and distribute supplies of all spares for the site. The 40m x 40m Training Centre facility will allow the on-site training of apprentices and craftsmen and also houses a conference centre which accommodates up to 150 people.

The Visitor Centre has been built to professionally manage the many thousands of visitors to the site each year. The Centre also contains a heritage centre, induction suite for new starters and contractors and a tactical control room.

The solution

The new buildings at Tata Steel’s Port Talbot Works feature several building envelope solutions including over 10,000m² of Trisomet® insulated roof panels in Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra® in Sargasso and Anthracite. Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra® in the same finishes was also used for the 8000m² of Trimapanel® insulated, secret-fix architectural wall cladding system, in addition to Colorcoat Prisma® in Silver.

A further 2680m² of ComFlor® composite floor decking was also installed, including ComFlor® 51+ on the pump house, ComFlor® 60 on the substation and ComFlor® 100 on the Training Centre. All products in Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra® were installed under the Platinum® System Guarantee scheme.

Both the Visitor Centre and Stores Building were delivered to a BREEAM Outstanding rating and the Training Centre has achieved BREEAM Excellent status. The project has also been registered with Constructing Excellence Wales as an Exemplar Project.
