Los Hornillos is a major waste recycling and reclamation centre in Valencia. The centre was established in the late 1960s but has undergone extensive modernisation since 2005. Buildings at the centre incorporate modern technology including biofilters for process air treatment and the prevention of odour emission.
The challenge
Los Hornillos composting plant processes thousands of tonnes of waste organic matter every year. The plant includes two refining lines, 25 compost tunnels (for the maturation of compost) and a large-capacity compost warehouse. The plant can produce more than 200,000 tonnes of compost annually for use in horticulture and agriculture.
Following pre-treatment, organic material is decomposed through exposure to oxygen. This critical process takes place in the ‘Rotopala’ building where mechanised equipment is used to turn the waste – ensuring that all parts are exposed to oxygen. The building has been designed to treat 60,000 tonnes of organic material annually. The decomposition process results in a corrosive atmosphere that places heavy demands on the fabric of the building. The plant operators required a pre-finished steel interior that could be guaranteed to last.
The solution
Due to the demanding internal and external environment, the Rotopala building at Los Hornillos utilises double sided Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra® in the pre-finished steel system manufactured by Metalperfil. Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra® exceeds the requirements of CPI5 as per EN 10169:2010 demonstrating excellent barrier properties when used internally.
Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra® in ‘White’ is used for the large internal roof span and ‘Goosewing Grey’ on both the internal and external faces of the walls to give long-lasting performance.
