The long-awaited first direct Arena in Leeds is a really sound example of how structural materials can make or break the performance of an entertainment venue.
The long-awaited first direct Arena in Leeds is a really sound example of how structural materials can make or break the performance of an entertainment venue.
The first stadium in the UK to feature a unique fan shape which radiates out from a central stage, its location in the heart of Leeds in a highly-populated area meant that external noise threatened to become an unwelcome backing track for visiting superstars, concerts and attractions.
But thanks to the clever use of ComFlor® structural decks and expert advice from manufacturer Tata Steel, the result is truly music to the ears not only for the audience but for developers Leeds City Council, who had strict requirements that external noise levels were 10dB lower inside the arena.
Tata Steel puts Leeds in the spotlight with new entertainment arena
Over 9000m2 of ComFlor® is installed at the venue, creating a double layered acoustic roof. ComFlor® 60 provides the base for the main steel mesh reinforced concrete, whilst ComFlor® 51+ is used to create a seamless visual finish for the walls.
The challenge for the project and for building envelope contractor Lakesmere Ltd was to specify a product that could perform visually, audibly and economically. Architects Populous had created an arena design which was not only a UK first on the inside, but featured a complex lit honeycomb façade that can change colours, featuring shimmering glazed glass and angular cellular shapes, topped with a roof spanning 70 metres at its widest point.
Leeds Arena roof is top of the pops thanks to Tata Steel
ComFlor® easily hit the right note for the £60m project as the ultimate lightweight steel decking for multi-rise buildings. Easy to install, its combination of excellent acoustic properties, exceptional spanning capabilities, fire protection, aesthetics and cost-effectiveness was just what the developers needed to hear.
Thanks to the new first direct Arena, Leeds is now centre stage when it comes to modern musical venue development, and after many years as the largest city in the UK without its own entertainment hub, it’s already become a big hit with pop fans and sports spectators alike.
