Manufactured metal transformed into the breathtaking incredible – these giant horses heads gracing the Scottish skyline are a majestic example of Tata Steel’s creative solutions with over 3,000m of steel tubes at their core.

Known as The Kelpies after the supernatural water horse from Celtic mythology, the magnificent, 100ft high horse heads – the largest pair of equine sculptures in the world – were built using premium Celsius 355® hollow tube product manufactured at the Corby and Hartlepool sites.

Over 10,000 special fixings secure the shimmering steel skin of the horses to their tubal steel framework skeletons, in a five-month construction project which isn’t just a £5m public art engineering marvel but heralds the transformation of a new greenspace in Falkirk.

Visible from the M9 motorway, the giant horses rearing up from the ground are part of a £43m redevelopment of land between Falkirk and Grangemouth, known as the Helix Project.

Designed by Glasgow artist Andy Scott, who was inspired by the tradition of Clydesdale working horses which once pulled barges in the canals of Scotland, The Kelpies sit proudly either side of a new specially-constructed canal lock and basin due to open this Spring, which links the Forth and Clyde Canal to the North Sea, opening up the inland waterways to boating traffic.
