Our Heritage

Tata Steel in Europe was formerly known as Corus and rebranded as Tata Steel in 2010. 

Tata Steel was established in India in 1907 and the first ingot of steel was made at Jamshedpur in India in 1912.  

British Steel Corporation was formed as a nationalised company in 1967, bringing together a number of private companies such as the Steel Company of Wales, Richard Thomas and Baldwins, John Summers, and Stuarts & Lloyd. The company was privatised in 1988 to become British Steel plc.

In 1999, Corus was formed through the merger of British Steel plc and Koninklijke Hoogovens. 

Corus was acquired by Tata Steel in April 2007 in a transaction which created one of the world’s largest steelmakers, with a major presence in Europe as well as Asia.

History of British Steel
